Full thickness cardiac muscle damage resulting from an acute interruption of blood supply. Compared to NSTEMI (in which partial thickness damage of heart muscle develops), STEMI is more severe type of myocardial infarction. The most discriminating feature of STEMI is the ST-segment elevation in addition to the elevated cardiac biomarkers.
